Invitation to Whys (1): Success Beyond the Paycheck
The "Happiness Trap" vs. True Success
Welcome. I want you to think about the last time you said to yourself, "I’ll be happy when..." When I get that promotion? When I buy that house? When I hit that number in my savings account? Modern psychology calls this the "Hedonic Treadmill." We convince ourselves that happiness is a destination we are running toward. But the moment we reach it, the satisfaction fades, and we return to our baseline of wanting more. We are running fast, but we aren't moving forward.
We often assume success solves our internal problems. But often, it exposes them.
Think of an Olympic athlete who trains for four years for a single moment. They win the gold medal, stand on the podium, and feel an incredible high. But two weeks later, they are sitting on their couch in silence, overwhelmed by a sense of emptiness. They reached the peak of human performance, but their internal landscape didn't change . We experience micro-versions of this every time we get a raise that feels exciting for one month and "normal" by the next. The "success" didn't solve the internal restlessness.
What We Want: The "Sorted" Life
Why do we stay on the treadmill? We are driven by specific wants that we believe will finally fix our internal anxiety.
-
We Want Security: We believe a high bank balance will protect us from the chaotic "what-ifs."
The "Prepper" Mindset. We all know someone who obsessively checks their investment apps. They feel a hit of relief when the number is high, but panic the moment the market dips. The number changes, but the fear remains constant .
-
We Want Approval: We want to be admired by our peers to validate our existence.
The "LinkedIn Scroll." You post a career update and get 200 likes. You feel validated for an hour. Then, you see a peer post something even more impressive, and suddenly your achievement feels small .
-
We Want Control: We want to feel like masters of our destiny.
-
The "Itinerary Traveler." You plan a vacation down to the minute. Then, a flight gets canceled. The distress isn't just about the flight; it's about the shattering of the illusion that you are in control .
-
The Three Shifts
To escape the treadmill, we must fundamentally alter why we work. We need to shift our operating system.
-
Shift 1: From "Working FOR Worth" to "Working FROM Worth"
The Real Story (Sarah): Sarah was a manager who spent 10 hours a day at the office, terrified that if she slipped up, she would be "exposed" as a fraud. She was miserable. When she accepted the premise that she was already "valued" by a Creator—that her worth was settled before she sent a single email—her fear vanished. She actually became a better manager because she wasn't leading out of anxiety .
-
Shift 2: From "My Money" to "Our Mission"
The Real Story (David): David earned a massive bonus. His instinct was to buy a luxury car to show everyone he had "made it." But he realized the car was just a mask for his insecurity. Instead, he used the money to fund a kitchen for a local shelter. The satisfaction of seeing families fed lasted for years, whereas the "new car smell" would have faded in months .
-
Shift 3: From "Checking Boxes" to "Human Connection"
The Real Story (Mark): Mark was a successful doctor who saw 40 patients a day. He was efficient, wealthy, and deeply lonely. He decided to shift his focus: he started treating each patient as a "friend" to be known, not a problem to be solved. Paradoxically, he found joy in his work again because he replaced "transaction" with "connection" .
How Faith Solves the "Inner Void"
Why bring "God" into a conversation about success? Because you cannot solve an internal problem (worth) with external solutions (money).
A. Solving "What We Want" (The Anxiety of Value)
The "Market Value" Trap: If your value is based on the market, it fluctuates with the economy. If your value is based on a Designer, it is fixed.
The Picasso Analogy: Imagine a painting at a garage sale. If you think it's just old canvas, it’s worth $5. If you find out it's a "Picasso," its value is millions, regardless of where it is hanging. Intimacy with the Creator reminds you that you are a "Picasso." You don't need to hustle to prove your value; you just need to know the Artist .
B. Making "What We Need" (Support) Possible
The "Networking" Trap: In a networking event, people talk to you to see what they can get from you.
The Community Solution: You cannot maintain a counter-cultural view of success alone. A healthy faith community is a space where people talk to you to see how they can support you. It is a place where you can admit you are struggling at work and be met with prayer rather than judgment .
Conclusion: From "Chasing" to "Knowing"
If you are tired of the "climb," I invite you to stop. The Christian invitation is not to a set of rules, but to a relationship with the Ultimate Reality. It is the discovery that true success isn't a status you achieve; it is a Person you get to know. When you have that connection, you stop needing the world to applaud you because you are already known.
